Getting Around London

Public transport in London is incredibly efficient and easy to use. With their tap-in, tap-out system on the Underground and buses, you can simply use your phone or contactless card. No need to buy paper tickets! The best part? There’s a daily cap of £9.90 for travel within central London. So, no matter how much you hop around, you’ll never spend more than that.

That said, central London is surprisingly walkable (if you don’t mind braving the crowds). I often prefer walking between spots. It’s free, and you get to stumble upon little corners and cafés you’d otherwise miss.

1. Visit the National Theatre

If you’re a massive theatre fan like me, or even just someone curious about London’s rich entertainment scene, you don’t always need a ticket to get your theatre fix! Located on the South Bank, the National Theatre is well worth a visit. You can explore the riverside terraces, wander through the public foyers, browse the shop, and often catch free exhibitions, talks, or even open rehearsals. It’s a great way to soak up the creative buzz without spending a penny.

2. Watch Street Performers

London’s street theatre is world-class. Head to spots like Covent Garden or Leicester Square, where buskers, musicians, and performers entertain crowds daily. Completely free! (Though, if you can, it’s always nice to drop a little tip to show your appreciation!)

3. Catch Annual Performances

Keep an eye out for free annual events, like the West End LIVE weekend in Trafalgar Square every June. Here, casts from major West End musicals perform live for free. It’s an unforgettable experience for any theatre lover.

4. Explore the Royal Opera House

Open daily from noon, the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden is another gem for theatre fans. You’re welcome to wander around the building, check out the shop, and admire the beautiful interior. If you fancy spending just a little, grab a drink and enjoy the views over Covent Garden from the upstairs balcony.

5. Explore the Free Museums

London is spoiled for choice when it comes to museums, and the best part is that most of them are completely free!

  • The British Museum – Home to the Rosetta Stone and Egyptian mummies.

  • The Natural History Museum – Dinosaurs, gemstones, and one of the most beautiful buildings in London.

  • The Science Museum – Interactive and fun, especially if you’re travelling with kids (or are just a big kid yourself).

  • The V&A (Victoria and Albert Museum) – Art, fashion, and design heaven.

6. Wander Through London’s Art Galleries

For art lovers, London’s galleries are some of the best in the world.

  • Tate Modern – Modern and contemporary art, plus amazing views of the Thames from the top floor.

  • The National Gallery – A treasure trove of classics, right in Trafalgar Square.

  • God’s Own Junkyard – A hidden gem in Walthamstow filled with neon lights and colourful chaos. It’s quirky, fun, and most importantly, Instagram-worthy.

7. Enjoy the Parks

London’s green spaces are stunning year-round. Take a picnic, people-watch, or just enjoy a breather from the city buzz.

  • Hyde Park – Iconic and central.

  • Regent’s Park – Beautiful gardens and views from Primrose Hill.

  • Kensington Gardens – Serene and elegant, right next to Kensington Palace.

8. Take in Panoramic Views at the Sky Garden or Horizon 22

You don’t have to pay for The Shard to get epic city views! Sky Garden and Horizon 22 both offer incredible panoramas, and they’re completely free. Just make sure to book a ticket online in advance. Slots can go quickly, especially at sunset.

9. Find the Fun Little Spots

London’s charm is in the details. Snap a photo at Platform 9¾ in King’s Cross for your Harry Potter fix, or wander through Neal’s Yard in Covent Garden. This hidden courtyard bursts with colour, plants, and cute cafés.

Another Harry Potter-themed spot is Goodwin’s Court. This narrow, 17th-century alleyway in Covent Garden features overhanging buildings and rounded windows used in the films.

10. Stroll Through the Markets

Even if you’re not buying anything, London’s markets are a feast for the senses.

  • Camden Market – Alternative, vibrant, and always buzzing.

  • Covent Garden – Street performers and boutique stalls.

  • Borough Market – Heaven for food lovers (sample a few tasters while you’re there!).

  • Southbank Centre Market – Great atmosphere along the river.

  • Portobello Road Market – Iconic antiques and vintage finds.

11. Watch the Changing of the Guard

This iconic ceremony at Buckingham Palace is a must-see if you’ve never done it before. It happens on select days, so check the schedule beforehand! But it’s free, full of pageantry, and very British.

12. Wander Through Harrods

You might not be able to afford much in Harrods (I certainly can’t!), but it’s worth going just to browse. The architecture, displays, and sheer luxury of it all make it a fun experience, especially at Christmastime!

13. Visit St Dunstan in the East

This one feels like a secret garden in the middle of the city. St Dunstan in the East is a bombed-out church turned into a peaceful garden, tucked between London Bridge and the Tower of London. It’s beautiful, calm, and perfect for a quiet moment away from the noise of the city.

Bonus Idea for Performers: Audition!

Here’s a slightly different, and completely free, opportunity for anyone who loves performing! Why not try out at an audition? Most are free to join, and you can usually pre-sign up or simply turn up on the day. It’s a fantastic way to build confidence, make new friends, and try something different.

Over the summer, I went to two Disney auditions held at Base Dance Studios and Pineapple Dance Studios. It was such a fun experience! I met amazing new friends who I still keep in touch with. Plus, I got a taste of what a professional audition feels like.

As someone interested in performing, it was both inspiring and exciting. I even got to explore the famous studios and perform there, all without spending a penny!

Making the Most of London

London can be expensive, but it doesn’t have to be. Some of my favourite memories there have cost absolutely nothing. They happened by stumbling upon hidden gems and going for spontaneous adventures. Whether you’re after history, views, or, like me, anything with theatre and the arts, there’s something free (and fun) waiting around every corner.

So, what are you waiting for? Pack your bags and get ready to explore!
