South Africa is a country that grabs your heart from the moment you arrive. With its gorgeous weather, vast wildlife, stunning scenery, and—of course—the wine, it’s truly a place you should visit at least once in your life. Trust me, planning a trip here can feel a bit overwhelming at first. But don’t worry, I’m here to walk you through the essentials and share some insider tips so you can create your own ultimate travel guide to one of the most incredible destinations in the

LANGUAGE: North African languages are dominated by Arabic, Amazigh (Berber) languages, and regional colonial languages like French. English is also commonly spoken across many of the countries.

CURRENCY: North Africa does not share a single currency; instead each country has its own currency.
Algeria: Algerian dinar (DZD)
Egypt: Egyptian pound (EGP)
Libya: Libyan dinar (LYD)
Morocco: Moroccan dirham (MAD)
Sudan: Sudanese pound (SDG)
Tunisia: Tunisian dinar (TND)

PLUGS: North African countries use different plug standards depending on the specific country, primarily featuring type C (Europlug), type E, and type F, alongside type G in some regions. Voltage across the region is generally 220V–230V. I would recommend a universal adapter to be safe.

TRANSPORT: North African transport features networks like road, ship, rail, and domestic flights connecting primary hubs in Morocco, Tunisia, and Egypt to Europe. Within the countries, taxis, trains and metro are commonly used.

SAFETY: As a female traveller, you definitely need to keep your wits about you when travelling in and around North Africa. Street harassment can be common for female travellers, as men can often approach and catcall. Although crime against tourists is pretty low, awareness is still vital.

WHAT TO EXPECT

I would recommend visiting Northern Africa in the springtime or the cooler months of the year, from October to April. Days can still be warm but not as extremely hot as the summer season, which can make it more difficult for sightseeing and outdoor activities. Visiting outside of the holiday season would also be ideal for fewer crowds and less tourism.

Safari

South Africa sits at the southern tip of the African continent, known for its incredible diversity in landscapes, wildlife, and culture.

Whether you’re seeking a safari adventure, a coastal escape, or a vibrant city escape, South Africa has something for every traveller. From the iconic Table Mountain and sprawling vineyards to golden beaches and game reserves, the country offers experiences as varied as its scenery.

With 11 official languages, a rich history, and a fusion of traditions, South Africa’s culture is as colourful as its landscapes. It's a destination that leaves a lasting impression on all who visit.

BEST TIME TO VISIT

LANGUAGE: South Africa has 11 official languages, the most widely spoken of which are Zulu and Xhosa. English is commonly spoken in all the big cities.

CURRENCY: The currency in South Africa is called the Rand. 1 South African Rand equals
0.044 Pound sterling.

PLUGS: South Africa uses four types of plugs: C, D, M, and N. The standard voltage is 230 volts at 50 hertz. I would recommend a universal adapter to be safe.

TRANSPORT: Although South Africa's public transport is made up of buses and mini taxis, I wouldn't recommend using them due to the uncertain safety. I'd recommend renting a car or using Uber.

SAFETY: As a female traveller, you definitely need to keep your wits about you when travelling in and around South Africa. South Africa is known to have a very high level of crime, so just be sure not to walk around alone and keep an eye on your belongings.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Although there's plenty to do all year round, I would recommend travelling in South Africa's warmer summer months, which occur from November to March. The days are usually hotter and the days are longer.

If planning a safari trip, some people tend to prefer booking in their winter months so the drives are slightly more bearable than in the scorching sun. However, I experienced a safari in the mid-summer, and although extremely hot at times, we tended to drive early and later in the day, and so it wasn't much of an issue.

Travelling in South Africa's winter months may also have the benefit of less tourism and cheaper flights.
