Wellesley, Massachusetts in the fall feels like stepping straight into a storybook, or at least the Stars Hollow Set. The leaves turn shades of red and brown; shopfronts are decorated with cheerful autumn signs, and there’s an unmistakable small-town warmth that makes you half-expect someone to cue soft piano music.
For me, Wellesley was more than just a picturesque New England town. It was the final stop at the end of my three-month trip across America, and a much-needed pause during one of the hardest chapters of my life.
A Morning in the Heart of Wellesley
Start your day with a walk through town, where you’ll pass the striking Wellesley Congregational (Village) Church and plenty of charming shops. Stop by Wellesley Books, a cozy local bookstore, and browse through homeware stores before making your way to Linden Square.
For brunch, head to Tatte Bakery & Café . Their pancakes and pastries are incredible. If you’re feeling autumnal (which, lets face it, you are), try the apple pie, corn soup, or honey apple cake, paired with a strong coffee with a seasonal spice.
An Afternoon at Wellesley College
A visit to Wellesley College is a must, especially in the fall. Grab a pumpkin latte from the Leaky Beaker Café on campus, then wander through the botanical gardens and along the lake. The peace and quiet is so cinematic and the view is so movie-perfect you start wondering where your love interest and dramatic lighting went.
Late Afternoon Shopping
Before shops close, stop by Wasik’s Cheese Shop to pick up wine and cheese for later, a local favourite that feels like the kind of place Miss Patty would gossip in if she lived in Massachusetts. A little indulgence never hurt anyone, especially when it comes wrapped in wax paper.
An Evening in
For dinner, order Thai food from The Laughing Monk Café (great name, even better Pad Thai). Whether you eat out or bring it home, Wellesley practically insists you slow down. Settle in with your Wasik’s cheese and wine for later, and let the day wind down slowly. Wellesley has a way of making even a quiet evening feel special, the kind of simple luxury that makes small-town life so appealing.

My Experience
For me, Wellesley wasn’t about checking every box on a travel list. It was about slowing down. After months of constant travel, and only a week after losing someone close, this little town became a place to breathe.
I stayed with a woman who had also lost her father at my age. She cried with me and reminded me that grief is something you carry, but it also connects you to others. That moment gave me a glimpse of both sadness and hope. That one day, I might still struggle, but I can live a full and happy life, and perhaps even comfort someone the way she comforted me.
I only spent a couple of days here, but it was exactly what I needed: a pause in the storm, a reminder that beauty and community still exists, even when life feels heavy.

Seasons of Life
Whether you come for the bookstore, the coffee, or just the feeling that you might bump into Lorelai Gilmore at any point, Wellesley has a way of feeling like home, even if just for a weekend. In the fall especially, it’s a place where life feels a little bit like a TV show, and a reminder to embrace new seasons, both in nature and in life.
