The beautiful, white-washed buildings with blue domes, the cobblestone streets and the sun sparkling on the Aegean sea. It can only be Santorini. Possibly one of the most beautifully picturesque islands in the world! Visiting this iconic Greek paradise will bring you so many unforgettable moments (and incredible instagram pictures) to bring your Mamma Mia fantasies come to life!

Visiting Santorini is a bucket-list experience, and if planned right, it can be explored in just one day. Here’s my personal guide to making the most of your day trip so you can experience the magic for yourself.

Starting the Day with a Sunrise Ferry

Ferry rides might not sound the most exciting, but with the right approach, they can be a highlight of your day. An early start to the day definitely requires a caffeine boost so grab a coffee at the ferry’s café to kickstart your morning, then head to the top deck to watch the sunrise over the island fading behind you.

Spend the journey chatting with your travel buddy or enjoying some entertainment. Just be mindful of your phone battery, cause you're definitely going to need it!

Mornings in Oia

After a short bus ride from the ferry dock, begin your day in Oia, arguably the most scenic village on Santorini. Our local guide led us to what she called the best breakfast spot — Lolita’s Ice Cream Shop. Ice cream for breakfast? Absolutely!

Spend a couple hours strolling through the narrow streets and explore the pretty boutique shops and art galleries. The views overlooking the village and the sea are not to be missed, and don’t forget to stop at the iconic photo points overlooking the iconic blue dome church to get those perfect pictures for Instagram!

Take a break from the morning sun at Meteor Café, ideal for a refreshing lemonade while people-watching and taking in the island as it comes to life.

Rooftop Lunch in Fira

By midday, you’ll want to refuel. Head to Fira, the capital of Santorini, which offers a wide variety of Greek restaurants serving Mediterranean specialties, from seafood platters to moussaka and traditional gyros.

I recommend Mama’s Restaurant and Wine Bar, a charming rooftop restaurant with a warm atmosphere. Pair their delicious gyros with a glass of Assyrtiko, a white wine grown in the island’s volcanic soil.

Exploring Fira’s Stunning Streets

After lunch, explore Fira’s cobbled streets, filled with boutique shops and charming cafés. If you’re feeling energetic, climb to the top of the village for breathtaking panoramic views of Santorini’s volcanic landscape.

In the evening, Fira’s streets come alive with bars offering cocktails, occasional live music, and dazzling views over the sparkling lights of the island. No matter what, Fira captures the perfect blend of beauty, history, and vibrant energy.

End the Day with a Sunset Ferry

As your day trip concludes, take the ferry back while watching the sun set over the beautiful island you’ve just explored. You’ll leave with memories, photos, and probably some sore feet!

Extra Tips for Visiting Santorini

  • Peak Season: Be wary that Santorini is extremely busy during summer, especially July. The heat, crowds, and small spaces can feel overwhelming.

  • Stay Hydrated: Bring plenty of water, suncream, and take regular breaks at one of the island’s many cute cafés.

  • Consider Off-Season Travel: Santorini is beautiful all year round. Visiting outside of peak summer months can provide a more relaxed experience.

Santorini is truly a postcard-perfect destination, blending natural beauty with rich history. This guide highlights my favourite spots, but there’s so much more to discover.
